What is MathsKillarney?

MathsKillarney is a two week summer course in Leaving Cert Higher Level Maths to be held in St. Brendan's College, Killarney from July 19th-30th 2021. This course is for students who have completed one year of the Leaving Cert programme and plan to sit the Leaving Certificate exam in June 2022.
The course , which has been in existence for over 20 years, was the brainchild of Mary Rose Felle , an experienced teacher of maths, applied maths and resident of Killarney.  It's original home was in the Brú na Páirce campus.  The course has built up a reputation of excellence which is as a result of the professional level of teaching delivered by an experienced team of teachers. These teachers all have extensive experience of teaching Higher Level Maths, correcting State Exams as well as  having an involvement in the design and delivery of second level mathematics education reform in Ireland.
The course is an opportunity for students of Higher Level Maths to maximise their potential and to be exposed to the whole of the leaving Certificate course which gives a greater understanding of the links between topics in the subject. Students have over the years consistently reported a greater understanding and confidence in Maths after completion of the course.

COVID-19

On the 1st May 2020 following the announcement and publication of Covid-19 restriction protocols, MathsKillarney opted to deliver the 2020 course online through the Zoom platform and Google Classroom.  Supervised study was also facilitated which was enhanced by 'breakout' rooms to support individual learning. On the last day of the course, we conducted an anonymous survey amongst the students and the feedback was overwhelmingly positive as evidenced by the following comments:
  • I found the break out room very helpful if I didn't understand part of the homework.
  • Standard of teaching was excellent and it was all efficient learning.
  • Helped me to see the link between all the topics on the course.
  • Got a great grasp of the course and thought the teachers answered questions very well and precisely.
  • Really good and precise notes.
  • It is intense but very beneficial.  Great chance for revision and to get a head start on new topics.  Was definitely a challenge on Zoom but the teachers managed it very well.  I am very grateful that I had the opportunity to do the course.
  • Very good revision for 6th year and great introduction for material that we have not covered in school yet.
  • Course was very good, covered a lot of topics and gives a good platform to go into 6th year with.  Thanks a million.
  • Really helped me revise the topics we had done in school.  Since school shut maths has been very hard to learn online but this course cleared up a lot for me.  Thank you for all your help.
  • The teachers were really helpful and explained everything really well.  I think I will definitely improve my grade after this course.
Parents were also very grateful the course went ahead:
  • We wish to thank all the teachers most sincerely for all that you did to teach and support ********** during the MathsKillarney course.  It can't have been easy for  you to do the entire course online but rest assured you did an amazing job under these most challenging times.  While intensive, ********** genuinely came out buzzing each evening which speaks volumes to the excellent quality of the teaching she received as well as the support that was provided. (C.M., Dublin).
In the event that the 2021 course cannot proceed in person and onsite in Killarney then the course will be delivered online during the same two week period: July 19th-30th.
